Our Poster Competition encourages students to take an active part in the Scientista Symposium by presenting their work to the conference’s audience of STEM students and professionals. Each student who wishes to participate in the fair must submit a 150-300 word abstract. Individual students or student teams made up of undergraduate and/or graduate students involved in STEM research are encouraged to apply. All eligible participants will be invited to present a poster during the closed Poster Judging Session and the open Poster Session during the Scientista Symposium.

Eligibility
To be eligible to participate in the Poster Session:
- Students must be enrolled part-time or full-time at an accredited graduate or undergraduate program during the Spring semester of 2019. Students who graduated in Fall 2018 are still eligible to present.
- Students must submit an abstract and proper documentation (see below).
- Students must be registered to attend the 2019 Scientista Symposium and commit to attending the poster judging session, poster fair session, and poster awards ceremony. Note: Your participation in the Poster Session will not be confirmed until you are officially registered to attend the Scientista Symposium.
- Students will be responsible for printing their own poster

Application Requirements
Anyone interested in presenting a poster must submit an abstract through the application form by the appropriate deadline. Applications will be assessed for proper documentation and will be accepted on a rolling basis until maximum capacity has been reached. We advise you to submit your application well in advance of the deadline.

Submission
Submissions should be sent electronically as a Microsoft Word document (or tex file with accompanying pdf, if special characters are required) to the research symposium committee using the form below and must be received no later than January 18, 2019. You will be notified on a rolling basis whether or not your abstract was accepted for the poster session.

- Abstract length: 150-300 words.
- Must contain the title, author names (including your research advisor’s name), author affiliations.
- File Name format: “Grad/Undergrad-LastName”
All submitted abstracts should include the following:
- Background: Identify the problem being addressed, its importance, and the hypothesis being tested
- Methods: Describe the approach taken to address the hypothesis including study design and data analysis.
- Results: Include a summary of findings/outcomes from the study.
- Conclusions: Discuss the significance of the findings from the study and its potential impact (if applicable).
- Each abstract should have a title (no longer than 30 words) and author affiliation. Abstracts should be approximately 250 words long (not including title and author affiliation). All special characters should be appropriately formatted.

Submission
- Form must be submitted in one sitting. Do not hit submit until all fields are completed.
- Upload your abstract using the form upload.
- Please provide the contact information of any authors of your paper.
- Please provide the contact information of your faculty supervisor. Supervisor permission is required for you to participate.

Poster Preparation, presentation and scholarship
- Poster format: No specific size is required; you can customize the poster as desired.
- The size of the poster board that will be given to you to mount the poster will be 36 inches tall and 48 inches wide.
- Each poster selected for the event will be given a scheduled display time during the event and the speaker is required to be there at their poster for the whole time slot.
- Board pins and tape required for mounting the poster will be given at the symposium
Travel Grant Selection Process
We provide travel grants to selected participants in the amount of $250. Given the limited number of grants, these are only open to poster presenters. The organizing committee and board members will select travel grant awardees. Awardees will be notified via email along with their poster acceptance. The following groups will be prioritized in the application process:
- Students with demonstrated financial need - low economic status, long-distance travel, etc.
- Underrepresented Minorities in STEM
- Dues-paying Scientista members
Scholarship Selection Process
Each poster presenter will be judged by a panel of judges during our closed poster session. Students will have 5 minutes to explain their research to each judge and answer questions by the judges. The posters and presentation will be assessed on:
- Overall organization and content, description and knowledge of their work, and presentation skills
